Product information "Knopfwerkzeug zum Knöpfe beziehen (Hammerschlag)"

With the hammer-strike button tool you cover button blanks with fabric or thin leather. Compression is done by hammer strike — a button press is not required.

Plastic buttons (aluminium cap and plastic back) become sew-on fabric buttons for clothing. Metal buttons (aluminium cap, metal back and metal eyelet) become covered upholstery buttons for furniture, benches or sofas.

The tool is designed for “Bombe” (domed) button blanks, especially YETEN and similar (ASTOR, MIKRON, PIERO). It is suitable for textile designers, tailors, saddlers, upholsterers, interior decorators and shoemakers.

Do I need a press?
No. Compression is done by hammer strike. A button press is not required.
Which button blanks can I use?
The tool is designed for Bombe-shaped blanks, especially YETEN and similar (ASTOR, MIKRON, PIERO). Getmore Crafts plastic (sew-on) and metal (upholstery) blanks are intended for this.
What is the difference between plastic and metal blanks?
Plastic blanks have an aluminium cap and a black or white plastic back; they are rust-free and meant for sew-on clothing buttons. Metal blanks have an aluminium cap, metal back and metal eyelet and are meant for upholstery buttons.
Which materials can I cover with?
Fabric or thin leather. Max. 0.5–0.7 mm for leather.
Which size should I choose?
Tool size and blank size must match. Available: 24 ligne / 15 mm, 26 ligne / 16 mm, 28 ligne / 18 mm, 30 ligne / 19 mm, 32 ligne / 20 mm, 36 ligne / 23 mm, 40 ligne / 25 mm, 44 ligne / 28 mm and 50 ligne / 32 mm.
Do I need to cut the material first?
Yes. Fabric or leather discs must be cut in advance, e.g. with the Getmore Crafts circle cutter. Discs must be large enough to fully enclose the blank.
How do I care for the tool?
Keep the tool parts clean and dry. Before each use, check that the pin and spring in the lower part move freely.

Size

Tool size determines the diameter of the finished buttons. Choose the same size as the button blanks and the circle cutter for the fabric or leather discs.

Available sizes:

  • 24 ligne / 15 mm
  • 26 ligne / 16 mm
  • 28 ligne / 18 mm
  • 30 ligne / 19 mm
  • 32 ligne / 20 mm
  • 36 ligne / 23 mm
  • 40 ligne / 25 mm
  • 44 ligne / 28 mm
  • 50 ligne / 32 mm

Button size is traditionally given in English lignes. For buttons, one English ligne is 1/40 inch, i.e. 0.635 mm. We also give the size in millimetres.

Common notations include:

  • L for ligne
  • the double prime
  • the triple prime
  • and colloquially “er

A designation such as 24L, 24″, 24‴ or 24er therefore means a button of size 24 lignes.

Conversion: size in lignes × 0.635 mm = diameter in mm. Example: 24 lignes is about 15.2 mm.

Intended use

The hammer-strike button tool covers button blanks with fabric or thin leather (max. 0.5–0.7 mm). It joins the two blank parts with the covering material by hammer strike into a finished covered button — a button press is not required.

Workflow

  • Place the lower tool part (with pin and spring) on a stable, flat surface.
  • Place the button-blank back with the eyelet down into the lower tool part.
  • Place the fabric or leather disc in the upper tool part (without spring and pin). Lay the blank cap smooth-side down on the disc and press the material disc with the cap into the tool.
  • Turn the upper tool part over and set it opening-down onto the lower tool part.
  • Strike the upper tool part with a hammer — the hammer blow presses from above and completes the joining.

Requirements

  • Fabric or leather discs must be cut in advance, e.g. with the Getmore Crafts circle cutter. Discs must be large enough to fully enclose the button blank.
  • Tool size, circle-cutter size and blank size must match (e.g. all 32 ligne).
  • The tool is designed for “Bombe” (domed) button blanks.

Notes

  • Work on a stable, impact-resistant surface.
